One of the best discoveries of my third go round with comics is the powerful world of indie comics. I had only ever experienced this type of writing in superhero stories that pushed their limited boundaries. The advent of my return to comics came about when I started listening to the podcast iFanboy. Their curation is responsible for all the reading I've done for the last nine years.
This title was raved about for a long time on that show and I finally got around to reading it this year. I know some people will never read comics for anything other than heroes. The same people might have favorite HBO shows. Scalped is the meeting place of both of these mediums.
It is the story of a Native american man: an FBI agent who is given the task of going home to the reservation and taking down the chief. In doing so Dashiell Bad Horse confronts every demon he left behind.
Jason Aaron is now everywhere in comics ( Wolverine and the X-men, Thor God of Thunder, Punisher, and Star Wars to name a few) This is the passion project that made his name.
I was drawn to the story in part because of my love of the movie Thunderheart which has similar themes and i highly recommend it as well.
