I can't claim a lot of cred when it comes to crime movies. I love Godfather but hate Scarface. My crime movies are the comic ones:The Oceans Movies, Guy Ritchies Snatch and Lock Stock, and the epic Untouchables.
These two latest high profile entries just didn't have anything for me to hold on to. The former had a the problem of lack of focus. Giving the two main characters on opposite sides of the law equal screentime left the finished product an unappealing mess. Don't get me wrong the performances are strong, the director just didn't give them the best framework to showcase that strength.
The latter reminded me of Eyes Wide Shut: an intense experience about a whole lot of nothin' Again the performances were strong but the moral of the tale was that the heroine was too weak for the war. She deserved a better story
