So, anyone who knows me would be nonplussed to find out that Peter Pan is one of my favorite stories. Not because I force them to endure marathons of every filmic incarnation, more that I have taken its theme as my guide for living.
This being said objectivity was nigh impossible when viewing Pan. I was actually able to isolate the problem with this production the day after the disappointing experience. One word: Hook. Not only was Garet Hedlund ill cast but in this case the character was superfluous. Newcomer Levi Miller needed no elder brother character. Rooney Mara's Tiger Lilly was enough partner for Peter.
Director Joe Wright was successful in tackling the tale of Pride and Prejudice in brief that BBC took a miniseries to tell. But the scope of this project seemed to overwhelm him to the detriment of most important part: the story. The world was gorgeous. Some tighter work with the editing and this would have been a home run.
